Myths of Naxos: Ariadne & Dionysus

14-04-2019

Naxos is a place where myths come alive. One of the most famous legends tells the story of Ariadne, daughter of King Minos, who helped Theseus defeat the Minotaur. Abandoned by Theseus on the shores of Naxos, she was discovered by Dionysus, the god of wine and festivity, who fell in love with her and made her his queen. This myth is said to explain the island’s connection to wine, fertility, and celebration. As you walk through the ancient ruins and gaze at the striking Portara, it’s easy to imagine the gods themselves wandering these lands.
